Mr saptarshi Basu spoke on the ever relevant topic of how IT has affected our lives. He emphasized on how IT has pervaded our lives irrespective of our social and financial background. The common man needs IT for everything whether something as small as transferring money from digital wallets like Phonepe or travelling from one place to another. IT is required in every field ranging from education, business, hospitals, and banking. He elaborated on the importance of information technology with emphasis on how IT can transform businesses . He took examples from the field of medicine and health care discussing how x-rays ,CT scans, MRI etc aid in this field. He also elaborated about the ease with which we can now do shopping with the advent of sites like amazon , ebay, Phonepe etc .He then talked about ITs role in environmental studies by utilising technology for doing remote sensing to predict natural disasters, precipitation, sun ray cover etc. A revolutionary technology is Google Earth which helps us to navigate the areas so smoothly nowadays instead of asking passerbys direction. He said that the most important advantage that we have in this pandemic is due to IT. It has helped us do disease mapping , situation analysis for hotspots, contact tracing to quarantine people and stopping the infection from increasing further.
IT has been a boon especially for its role in giving us the chance to do Work from home and given us the gift of flexible working hours in the middle of a life altering pandemic. Virtual offices have given people limitless opportunities to connect to their office system and keep on monitoring things in the office environment. This has led to a rise in productivity in the office situation after an initial adjustment time. IT has also given us social media for self expression. We can now publish writing,create blogs and post images showcasing our creativity. He pointed out the shift in power that has taken place from the steel industries in the early industrial revolution days to the IT companies now. He ended the presentation with the point that now the fight is not going to be about acquiring real estate but about acquisition of the minds of people and how technology has unleashed this new age of business by giving us the chance to do better inventory management , ERP and decision making systems.
